WiFi Tech: Comcast Xfinity Hack Concerning 35 million

Introduction:

Comcast has informed customers of their internet service Xfinity of a data breach that has left their information to be stolen.

There was a vulnerability in their systems which was exploited and left customer information to be stolen. The information consisted of names, contact information, and in some cases partial social security numbers and birth dates.

The notice went out to customers on Monday, stating there was unauthorized access to their systems from October 16th to October 19th of this year.

The breach notice filed by the company highlights that in total roughly 36 million people were affected by this.


The Breach:

Xfinity has traced the breach to a vulnerability disclosed by Citrix who alerted Xfinity and other companies on October 10th. Since then they have patched the security threat however there is suspicious activity within their systems.

The hack resulted in the theft of usernames, hashed passwords, partial social security numbers, security questions and answers, and more.

Moving forward, Xfinity is urging users to change their passwords in their next login and to enable two-factor authentication.
