Tech News: New York Times Sues Microsoft and OpenAI

12-27-2023

Introduction:

The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI over claims on copyright and how their articles were used to train the AI model.

The lawsuit is naming Microsoft as a defendant and states the firms should be held responsible for "billions" in damages.

Language models such as ChatGPT learn by analyzing a massive amount of data sourced from the internet.

Filed on Wednesday in a Manhattan federal court, the New York Times originally tried to seek a resolution in April yet failed in doing so.

The Lawsuit:

The New York Times is stating that millions of articles were used without its permission and as a result, the model is competing as a trustworthy information source.

ChatGPT in some cases generates excerpts from articles that can't be accessed without paying for a subscription. This means that readers can get content without paying for it, resulting in a loss of subscription revenue along with traffic to their site.

OpenAI is now facing multiple lawsuits filed in 2023. Some are from famous authors such as George RR Martin and John Grisham, and they all demand compensation for the model using their work.

Github is also arguing their code was used without permission in the training of AI Copilot.

None of these lawsuits have yet been resolved.
