Tech News: New Apple Store Policies 'Outrageous' - Spotify

01-18-2024

Introduction:

Epic Games originally brought Apple to court in August of 2020. Epic Games brought Apple to court due to the fact they believed Apple was engaging in wrong behavior. The court saw it that Apple acted against US competition laws.

Apple did not allow telling people of other ways of paying for subscriptions.

Since then, Apple has updated Section 3.1.1(a) to outline the new rules for developers. The new rules in the US allow people to subscribe without Apple's system but entail a 27% commission to Apple.

Spotify Response:

Spotify is outraged on the transaction fees taking up to 27%. Spotify accused Apple of "stopping at nothing" to protect profits. Apple is moving to make these changes in the UK as well.

Spotify believes the new policy is unfair and not what the US court intended to have Apple do.

Spotify urges UK lawmakers to "pass the bill swiftly" which would prevent Apple from implementing the same fees. Spotify believes it would help construct a more competitive and innovative approach.
