New information on space cell towers has come to light from SpaceX and other sources. SpaceX has launched six satellites into space which will have direct-to-cell capabilities. The launch took place at 10:44 pm EST on January 2.
The launch took place after SpaceX and T-Mobile made a joint announcement aiming for "Coverage Above and Beyond". T-Mobile customers are very likely to receive better service when the satellites activate.
Once the satellites get up and running they will act as cell phone towers within the sky. It's a major step forward in Starlink's plan to make connectivity available wherever a user is located.
Any cell phone with LTE capabilities will have the ability to utilize Direct to Cell tech. It's a huge leap forward and will be especially useful in emergency situations.
Starlink wrote that the satellites have an advanced eNodeB modem, which allows it to act as a tower. The towers will provide text function this year and IOT services will be available by 2025.
