A ransomware attack is when a victim's files and data end up being locked and encrypted until a certain amount is paid to the hacker who took out the attack. There are over a million each day.
Mortgage lending firm LoanDepot filed a report with the SEC. They reported an attack that resulted in system disruptions. LoanDepot said the hackers received access to their network within a form 8-K filing.
Ever since the intrusion, LoanDepot has taken action to contain the exploit and informed law enforcement of the issue.
Since the intrusion, LoanDepot has shut down certain systems and is taking further steps to ensure business systems in place are fully secure and to bring them back online as soon as possible.
Due to most information coming from the filing, it's not yet known if either personal or customer information was compromised in the process.
LoanDepot made a statement consisting of how they will continue to get the measure of the impact and if it will make a material impact on the company.
LoanDepot is the second mortgage firm in the US to fall victim to a cyberattack within the past two months. The first victim was Mr. Cooper who leaked data for 14.7 million users.
