Google Tech: Gmail Makes It Easier For Users To Unsubscribe

01-22-2024

Introduction:

Google is making it simpler to unsubscribe from emailing lists on both mobile and web versions. In an effort to make it more clear for users, Google is separating the "Report Spam & Unsubscribe". The new system will consist of buttons "Report Spam" and "Unsubscribe".

The changes being noted in a Google Workspace update, Google talked about the frustration of mass emails. Many users find it difficult to manage the amount of emails, which led Google to announce new guidelines.

The new guidelines applied to bulk senders and aimed to help users feel more safe. More recently, new changes have made it much simpler to manage subscriptions.

Gmail Update:

With the new unsubscribe button being moved to the hover actions within the thread list on the web, clicking it will take different actions depending on the setup from the publisher.

The button will either ask for confirmation or redirect to the newsletter's unsubscribe page. How it works is Gmail sends an HTTP request to the sender informing them of the removal of the user's address.

On top of these changes, Google is requiring bulk senders to implement a one-click unsubscribe link by February 2024. The link must be visible within the body and requests must be processed within just two days.

Google stated how users shouldn't have to go through a list of steps just to be removed and it should just 'take one click...'
