Last year Google eliminated 12,000 roles over the course of their multiple teams. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has warned employees in a memo to brace themselves for upcoming layoffs this year. The layoffs come as a result of pushing their resources more toward Artificial Intelligence.
Pichai told Google employees in order to free up funds for investing, they would remove certain people from the company.
The layoffs of employees stem from the hopes that Google will lead in the AI arms race. As of now, Google is scheduled to release its AI goals for the year later this week.
Pichai enforced the hard truth that to be able to make this investment, they have to make 'tough choices'.
According to Pichai's words in the memo to employees, the number of layoffs would be less than last year. On top of that, it will not affect every team. The memo to employees comes after Google cut off hundreds of people earlier this month.
As the memo was released in multiple news articles, YouTube laid off 100 workers.
